Suspected taxi violence leaves six dead

Police urge members of the community come forward with information following fatal shooting.

Police are on the hunt for suspects connected to a fatal shooting at the N12 Etwatwa off-ramp on June 17.

According to Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulw, responding officers found a Toyota Corolla branded Benoni Taxi Association (BTA) Taxi Patrol Unit and a white Renault Triber parked a few meters apart and both riddled with bullet holes.

Five occupants of the Renault sustained fatal gunshot wounds,” Nevhuhulw said.

“The driver, who had also been shot, was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Another passenger escaped unharmed.”

Three occupants of the Toyota were unharmed.

“No arrests have been made and the motive behind the incident is under investigation,” said Nevhuhulw.

The BTA confirmed the incident stating that some of its members were involved in the morning’s incident, but declined further comment.

Police urge anyone with information that could assist with the investigation to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to log onto the MySapsApp.
